Methodology: How We Rate Pain, Fit, Size and Price

Many pages on Hallowed Ink show numbers: pain out of 10, a placement-fit percentage, a recommended size, a session length and a price range. This page explains exactly where those numbers come from, so you can decide how much weight to give them.

Pain ratings (1–10)

Pain ratings reflect the broad consensus of tattoo-pain charts published by artists and studios and of client reports: areas with thin skin over bone (sternum, ribs, spine, ankles, hands) rate high, while areas with more muscle or fat (outer forearm, outer upper arm, thigh, calf) rate low. We round to whole numbers and present them as typical values. Individual experience varies with skin, session length, sleep, stress and the artist's technique.

Minimum legible size

Each motif has a minimum size in inches, the smallest size at which its key features stay distinct as ink naturally spreads under the skin over years. Simple silhouettes (crescent moon, ghost, bat) start below about 1 inch; detailed subjects (Medusa, haunted house, tarot card) need 3–3.5 inches or more. Delicate styles multiply that minimum: for example, fine line needs about 1.4× and black-and-grey realism about 1.8× the size of a traditional version.

Placement-fit score

A combination page (for example "spider on the hand") is only published when the motif suits the placement. The fit score combines:

  1. Shape match. Each motif has a dominant silhouette (vertical, horizontal, round, compact or flowing), and each placement has a weight for each shape. For example, the spine strongly favors vertical and flowing designs.
  2. Size check. If the motif's minimum legible size exceeds the maximum practical size of the placement, the combination is excluded.
  3. Detail penalty. Highly detailed motifs are penalized on small placements.
  4. Room factor. Combinations that leave very little spare room are slightly penalized.

Combinations scoring below 70% are not published. That's why you won't find a page recommending a detailed Medusa portrait on a finger.

Session time and price estimates

We estimate tattooing time from the design's approximate area (based on its size), its level of detail, the style's relative time factor (realism and trash polka take longer than minimalist work) and a placement difficulty factor (hands, ribs and sternum are slower to tattoo). Price ranges apply a typical U.S. hourly range of about $120–$220 with a shop minimum of about $80–$150. Tips (customarily 15–25%) are not included.

These are planning estimates only. Artists price differently by city, demand and design complexity, and many charge flat rates for flash.

Healing times

Surface-healing ranges (usually 2–4 weeks) and full-healing ranges (about 3–6 months) are drawn from dermatology and public-health guidance and adjusted by placement: hands, fingers and ankles heal more slowly because of constant movement, washing and friction from footwear.

When we say a search is "rising", we refer to Google Trends data for the United States over the stated period (for example, the month to mid-October 2026). Percentages describe relative change in search interest, not absolute search counts, and low-volume queries can swing sharply.
