How to choose a dark tattoo motif

Start with meaning, not the picture. A skull, an hourglass and a death's-head moth can all say 'remember that life is short', but each one carries a different tone: rebellious, contemplative or uncanny. Read the meaning section of each motif and pick the one whose symbolism you'd still be glad to explain in ten years.

Then check the practical side. Every motif page lists the smallest size at which it stays clear, which is the most common reason dark tattoos disappoint. Simple silhouettes such as moons, bats and ghosts work below an inch; portraits such as Medusa or scenes such as a haunted house need three inches or more. Finally, look at the placement table on the motif page: it ranks body areas by how well their shape and space suit that motif.

The five families of dark motifs

Death & mortality covers the memento mori core: skulls, skeleton hands, hourglasses, reapers and moths. Classic Halloween covers the seasonal icons: pumpkins, ghosts, black cats, witches and haunted houses. Creatures & myth covers spiders, bats, ravens, serpents, Medusa and werewolves. Occult & mystic covers tarot, the all-seeing eye, crystal balls, moons and the ouroboros. Gothic icons covers Victorian symbols such as daggers, coffins, candles and black roses. Mixing families is common; a skull with a black rose, or a moon with a raven, combines two moods in one design.
